4th conference on the energy transition in the Mediterranean region organized by MEDENER and APRUE on May, 25th in Algiers

MEDENER, the Mediterranean Association of National Agencies for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is organizing in partnership with the Algerian Agency for the Promotion and Rationalization of the Energy Use (APRUE), the 4th MEDENER International Energy Transition Conference, under the high patronage of his excellence Mr. Salah Khabri, Minister of Energy, on the sidelines of the Algeria-EU Energy business forum:

Accelerating the Energy Transition in the Mediterranean region: towards a new sustainable energy mix.

What role for Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy and Gas ?

May, 25th 2016

 El-Djazair Hotel , Algiers, Algeria

In 2040, the Mediterranean region will face a triple challenge: demographic with at minimum a doubling of the urban population, energetic due to an increase in energy demand of almost 60%, and climatic  as consequence of an increase of about 50% in the greenhouse gas emissions.

In this context, the process of energy transition is a priority for all Mediterranean countries in the region, considered as climatic “hot-spot”. Today, the dynamics of the energy transition are engaged and the Euro-Mediterranean regional cooperation is able to strengthen its role by accelerating the implementation of the Energy Efficiency improvement policy and the promotion of Renewable Energies with a transitional energy mix that would rely on gas.

In preparation of the COP22, the 4th MEDENER international conference will make the opportunity to join many public and private stakeholders, policy makers, investors, donors, local authorities and representatives of the civil society in order to discuss and share priorities and solutions to accelerate process of energy transition in the Mediterranean region.

Solutions in a context of climate change in the Mediterranean: the actors get involved

DATE: Wednesday 9 December 2015 from 1 to 3 pm
LOCATION: Paris Le Bourget (Blue Zone) COP21

As a member of the MEDENER network, ADEME organised a Mediterranean side event on Wednesday 9 December for COP21 in Paris/Le Bourget in partnership with the Provence Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, which represents the MEDCOP initiative launched in June 2015 in Marseille.

By 2040, the Mediterranean region will have to contend with a three-part challenge: a doubling of the urban population, a nearly 60% increase in the energy demand, and a 50% increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The Mediterranean, which is considered to be a climate “hot spot”, has nevertheless generated many solutions to fight and adapt to climate change that are part of the MEDCOP initiative launched in June 2016 in the form of a positive Mediterranean agenda of 36 specific initiatives. Moreover, Euro-Mediterranean cooperation is being strengthened with the construction of an operational platform managed by MEDENER to accelerate the energy transition and limit the impact in the Mediterranean of the additional 2°C.

MEDCOP21: Mediterranean Civil Society Forum in the lead-up to the 2015 Paris Climate Conference

France is hosting The Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris from 30 November to 11 December 2015 (COP21/CMP11). This is a crucial event, since it will most likely lead to a new international agreement on climate aimed at maintaining global warming under 2°C.

In this framework, and with the support and presence of French President François Hollande, the Provence-Alpes Côte d’Azur region held a meeting for Mediterranean actors at La Villa Méditerranée in Marseille on 4 and 5 June, 2015.

This event underscored the shared commitment to adapting to and reducing climate change and highlighting the contribution of governments, local authorities, associations, businesses and networks working to promote sustainable development.

By setting itself the goal of contributing to the construction of a true positive agenda for the Mediterranean, this event also aimed to identify the constraints and opportunities offered by efforts to reduce climate change and to contribute, through shared concrete proposals, to projects in the Mediterranean.
