Skills

The National Energy Research Center (NERC), is part of the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), and was established in Amman for the purposes of research, development, training in the fields of new and renewable energy and raising the standards of energy use in the different sectors and to promote the utilization of renewable energy in Jordan.

NERC specializes in promoting energy efficiency and conservation practices in Jordan and the Middle East and has trained many private and public sector professionals in this area. NERC is strongly involved in projects within EU programs dealing with developing new energy efficiency technologies and techniques as well as know-how transfer. Regarding the services provided to third parties, NERC carries out techno-economic feasibility studies, building energy design studies, energy audits, monitoring, and measurements, as well as performance measurements and certification of buildings & products.

In addition, NERC was heavily involved in the development of the technical documents related to energy labeling and minimum performance and has assisted the public and private sectors in bridging the gap between them to ensure a smooth transition towards energy labeling and minimum performance parameters for home appliances.

Among the broader public sector clients are the European Commission (EC), the World Bank (WB), the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the German Bank for Reconstruction (KfW), Ministries of Energy and Mineral resources and many others.

During the past 18 years, NERC has completed many assignments in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy in Jordan.

Vision

As part of the Royal Scientific Society our vision is to become a unique center on the national and regional levels, with high credibility and good reputation among both private and governmental institutions.

Mission

Conduct applied research, provide services, implement projects, prepare technical & financial studies, provide consultations in the field of renewable energy, improve the efficiency of energy use in the local economy, and foster cooperation and communication with both the public and private sectors.

Responsibilities

Utilization of the local new and renewable energy sources like oil shale, wind energy, solar energy, bio-mass and geothermal energy to increase their contribution in the total energy mix and to meet the Kingdom’s energy needs.
Development of different methods of energy use and rationalization to increase the efficiency of energy use, decrease national energy cost, and protect the environment.
Manage and operate laboratories, units, and research and experimental stations to develop and use new and renewable energy sources.
Carry out training courses, seminars, and workshops to enhance and develop local abilities and technologies needed for the utilization of new and renewable energies.
Establish an energy information bank to help in research and studies and connect it to the national information database, or any other local institutions of similar goals to those of the center.

Services

— Lead the development and execution of clean technology and renewable energy projects from inception to completion. This involves preparing thorough economic feasibility studies, defining specifications and terms of reference, overseeing engineering contracts and
supervising construction and operation

— Conduct comprehensive energy audit studies across various sectors, encompassing industrial, commercial and water pumping facilities. NERC oversee the implementation of energy efficiency projects and provide measurement and verification services for
accurate assessments

— Undertake detailed technical, economic and environmental studies for diverse renewable energy projects, including solar, energy efficiency, wind and bio-energy initiatives

— Conduct wind measurements, assess wind potential through comprehensive studies, analyse data and perform site assessments and feasibility analyses for wind projects

— Install and maintain specialised towers for wind measuring devices, weather stations and solar radiation stations to ensure accurate data collection

— Drive capacity building and awareness initiatives through training and knowledge dissemination programmes. We implement training courses, seminars and workshops aimed at enhancing and developing local skills in energy efficiency, solar energy and wind applications

— Provide consultancy services related to converting waste into biofuels. NERC offers technical support and expertise in the production of bio-energy from biomass, including designing, building and operating bio-energy units such as biogas units and biodiesel units

— Support local municipalities in developing Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans by providing technical support in the identification of solutions for the reduction of CO2 emissions through the improvement of energy efficiency and renewable energy use, the
preparation of baseline emission inventory, and facilitate joining the Covenant of Mayors
